Permanent or rotational: choosing the right placement structure
20 February 2026 · 5 minute read

Rotation, two professionals sharing one role in alternating periods, began at sea, where leave must be structured. It is increasingly common in large households, and clients regularly ask whether it suits them. The honest answer: it depends on the shape of the household's year.
The case for a single permanent professional
One person learns the family completely: preferences never need re-explaining, trust deepens over years, and the household has a single standard. For most residences with a stable routine, a well-chosen permanent professional with properly protected leave remains the strongest structure.
Where rotation earns its cost
Rotation suits genuinely continuous operations: yachts in season, households that entertain relentlessly, or principals whose travel would otherwise burn out a single professional. Coverage never lapses and neither person accumulates exhaustion. The costs are real: two salaries at partial or full weighting, and a handover discipline that must be maintained forever.
Deciding for your household
Map the calendar honestly. If the role is demanding for ten weeks a year, seasonal support beats rotation. If it is demanding fifty weeks a year, rotation beats attrition. The wrong answer is the quiet one: a permanent professional whose leave is never actually taken.
